Damai I

Falsafah meraih jalanan
Falsafah yang tak menentu
Babi-babi girang berbunyi
Umat berlindung di balik dewaan
Seakan Nusa Dewata
Kepada kaum yang melayu
Kata nenek moyang merayulah
Pulangnya aku bersama kelu di dada
Di kala wawasan begini
Hidup kita di "Bandar Syurga"
Tapi babi turut menari
Ku harungi hari demi hari
Tapi bahawasanya pucuk damai berada di sini

Biopirates According To Bry Lynas

Pirates were a bloodthirsty lot who stole and killed to make themselves rich. Often, they ended up getting killed themselves. They were outlaws, hunted down whenever possible by naval ships from various countries. The biopirates are a bit different. They don't kill, they patent. And they are completely protected by the law so nobody hunts them. They are usually employed by corporations or even governments to go and collect genetic material, e.g., seeds from places like India or the Amazon.

In India, the neem tree has been used by people for thousands of years for things like killing pests and as a medicine. An American company patented the tree which means that anyone using it should, by law, pay the company. This has outraged many people on the receiving end of this legalised theft. The Indian scientist Vandana Shiva explains that the real cause of biopiracy is the left-over colonial idea dating back to Columbus’s 'discovery'.

Columbus 'discovered' the Americas in 1492 and from that time on, Europeans began to take the land away from the native Americans, the original inhabitants of what are now Latin and North America. (They did the same in Africa and Australia.) The Americas became Europe's colonies, to be exploited in any way - including killing native people if they objected.

It's this same colonial tunnel vision which permits the piracy of gene resources and knowledge from non-Western cultures to be claimed as 'invention'. This means this once-free heritage of seeds or knowledge can be protected by patent. This is just legalised stealing. Knowledge now strangled by patents (called in legal language 'intellectual property rights' or IPRs) used to be freely shared between everybody who needed to use it.

Now, after patenting, people have to buy it to be able to use it legally - including those who had learned it as it was passed down through each generation in their communities. I don't know what you think about that but I think it's wrong. Your laws need changing!

To find out in depth about patenting, intellectual property laws and biopiracy, try Vandana Shiva on 'Protecting the Pirates' and turmeric (a spice used widely in India for eating and healing) and patenting. A US company called RiceTec has even tried to patent basmati rice in India and jasmine rice in Thailand.

Lanun-lanun

Lanun-lanun Selat Malaka
Malam siang menyamun
Manakah tempat asal mu?
Mana diri mu?
Mana ibu mu?
Adakah bini mu bersama mu?
Kalau-kalau waktu kejadian
Bertenang jangan menghalang
Manakah, manakah tempat asal mu?
Mana ibu mu?
Mana bini mu?
Adakah pegangan antara mu?

Berperang Dengan Malam

Berperang dengan malam
Bayi dibasahi hujan
Menyeberang perempatan Kuningan
Jam sebelas kurang
Rebana di tangan seorang diri
Ku tahu dari jari-jari mu dan montok tubuh mu
Kau masih menetek atau sejurus sesudahnya
Ibu mu di mana?
Benarkah dia?
Kau dicucuri rahmat Ilahi
Kau kurniaan yang suci
Ku doakan mu
Ku tangisi nasib mu
Berperang dengan perasaan
Kau lebih berani dari ku

Merong (Bhg. I)

Putera menari di senjakala
Di bahtera yang tenggelam timbul dek ombak
Wahai kelana yang indah perkasa kemana pelabuhannya?
Pelabuhannya...
Kata Merong timur Polonnaruwa
Di mana berhala setinggi gunung
Bagai di syurga
Air yang mengalir
Pepohon bunga seroja
Bunga seroja

Batang Rajang

Dan hari ini ku kembali
Memudiki mu seprti datuk nenek sebelum ku
Di perjalanan ku fahami maksud tujuannya
Nan jiwa tersemu mambang
Nama-nama yang terlibat
Ada yang utuh, ada yang hilang
Nakhoda tersemu nanti
Batang-batang datang sehaluan
Pergi tak datang lagi

Intense A Life-Giver, Immense Is The River

As sins are cleansed and spirits set free upon this mighty running water
A recurrence embarks ashore rejuvenating like a raft of spring flower
Great and most consumptive cultural and technological upgrowth set in
With pride they carve out irrigated expanses to hearten their chagrin
Flowing past to solace wandering minds it glistens, captivating all eyes
In each meander, a hidden opinion where sedimentations might resize
Commencing the rest of time to frolic, silting away more space to lavish
Eroding an amber trail at twilight, bewildering them as fireflies vanish
Hinterland rapids swiftly swallowed as highland forests disassembled
Becoming plywood prefabs clustered on this confluence, eagerly gambled
Upwards so it seems the strife is until we seek for relief where the rise is
So some will shout out of face, "Down with the mighty dams and devices!"
Others crunch numbers on vast new tracts to police, plunder and profit
Unbecoming politicking anal swines who crawl to digest and dissolve it
They are quickest to declare a grand festivity with their very select few
Basking in the lords' regatta amongst future leaders, do we dare argue?
They would deny a hundred googol cockle shells awashed by the banks
Than admitting an egocentric vedanta, clearly outflanked by the ranks
A sufferers retreat sees a distant future foreclosing man's last estuary
For the restless and hungry, kings unveil our most generous tributary

Jika Ku Bersayap

Jika ku bersayap ku kan kembali
Kepada diri mu yang telah ku tinggal
Ke pantai yang indah yang aku cintai
Kenangan kau dan aku di sana kekal
Ferringhi, Ferringhi ombak dan pasir
Antara dua insan yang ditemukan
Telah mula kisah yang tak berakhir
Tiada yang dapat siapa hentikan
Mengapakah kau harus menghilangkan diri mu?
Di saat yang terbahagia
Kau meninggalkan diri ku sayang
Kiranya kini kasih ku murni
Jika ku kembali sanggupkah kau terima diri ku?
Ku sanggup memaafi jika kau jua memaafi

Ekspedisi Ledang [1992]: An Update

Fourteen years on. Faces have changed, yet not much progress. Pulling the brakes and changing directions can be as dear. Up there beneath the clouds lay the palace for spending time, and socialising. Testament to the greed of foolish mortals, and a reminder of how defeats may rise high above triumphant minds but never for a moment overshadow its course.
Yes, so it seems the army-sized expedition raised by the brilliant, young Deputy Minister had failed. Even by its underlying nature, a sinister figure lurks in the brake. However ironic, its drawing purpose and objectives have continued to generate sincere thoughts, and awaken the inner souls of inspired team members.
Reflected in an array of forms, these expressions and reactions towards the subject and matter enabled unrestful feelings to be perpetually debated, dissected and divulged, inadvertently garnering our very goals.
Furthermore, this pleasantly sublime and deep attachment which flows and flourishes with time is the true Essence of the Spirit in Existence.

Puncak Plastik II

Apakah ketawakan mu?
Batu, simen menyatu
Besi tumbuh dari tanah merah
Minyak hitam bercampur batu menjadi hamparan mu
Bahasa asing kedengaran semakin nyaring
